What Size Are the Holes
in Your Salt Shaker?

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men." Matthew 5:13

When I received the last issue of the “Carolina Connection” and read that the theme for the conference this year was on communication skills, I was reminded of the scripture above.

I asked myself, “How do people I encounter each day view my seasoning? Am I tasteless and undistinguishable from the world or am I too overpowering, destroying any chance of them seeing Jesus in me?” Either way, the people Christ has placed in my life are unable to experience His love through me.

We communicate the love of Christ through our reactions to daily events. I am sure you have heard the saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” Just like too little salt causes our food to be bland or an overabundance makes it unpalatable, so can our way of communicating to the world. And the world is taking notes. We can be so much like the world and become mixed in with the world’s ways that we become so deluded and Christ goes undetected. On the other side of the spectrum, if we take the lid off the salt shaker and dump the whole bottle out at once, our testimony becomes unpalatable and the world rejects us.

Salt has many cleansing and healing qualities, as well as being a seasoning that enhances the flavor of food. Like the body craves salt … the world is hungry for Christ, and the gift he has provided for us by paying the penalty for our sins. The people God places in our lives will hopefully see Him in us, and taste the flavor of his love through us, so much so, they will desire more of Him.

The only way to protect ourselves to be the seasoning the world needs is to let Christ be the salt shaker, and we the salt. We can’t stay inside the salt shaker because we will be of no use. If we allow Him to, He will control the amount of salt that comes out to season those around us and then we can be used … not in a strong and obnoxious way or so diluted that no one would notice, but in just the perfect amount.

As you go about your day, ask God to control the flow of seasoning for the people that He puts in your path. Stay alert to what God is doing so that you can be used by Him to sprinkle a loving touch in their lives. Buckle up and hold on because you will be in for the blessing of your life as you witness God’s transforming power!

PRAYER: Lord, I ask that You help me to love the people I come into contact with today. Help me to understand that You love each of us and have created us uniquely. Season my words and actions, that I might communicate Your love to others, giving them a desire to know You more.
